As Landon (my husband/assistant/carrier of stuff) and I walked around the Detroit Zoo in preparation for Olivia and Josh’s engagement photographs, I knew it was going to be great. So many gorgeous landscapes mixed with such a fun couple can’t go wrong! After chatting with Olivia about the places around the world we have each been able to travel to, and finding out that Josh runs a comic book reviewing website (!), I am more than qualified to tell you that these are awesome people.

We decided to begin the day in the aviary, where the gorgeous light poured in from the windows and Olivia and Josh could keep warm while getting used to the camera. …they are, as it turns out, naturals:

The shot below is one of my very favorites! We had to be patient to capture one of our little otter friends in the shot, but the moment was worth it. <3

The polar bear below seemed a bit confused as Olivia and Josh stopped to cuddle near his fence. “Crazy humans…”

The polar bear exhibit features a new walk-through section where you can go below the water to explore the other side of the arctic world! I adore how Olivia’s red dress brings out the blue…

As the Detroit Zoo closed it’s doors, we headed out into the Royal Oak neighborhoods to look for some dinner! Bastone Brewery had kindly agreed to let us shoot inconspicuously in their restaurant.. and let me tell you, the salmon was AMAZING.

As we awaited our food, trouble started up! An impromptu silverware fight broke out, with Josh throwing the deathstroke!

These two playful lovebirds have someone else very special in their lives: their son, Griffin! Although he wasn’t with us for the engagement session, we wanted to make sure he got into the photographs, too.

With their (delicious) meals over, we made sure to grab up some of the amazing sunset light…

The shot below is an example of why I am head over heels in love with my new 85mm 1.8!

Finally, we stopped by the Main Art Theater. Off camera flash (580ii w/mini-softbox, held camera left by assistant… for you camera tech nerds out there) allowed us some playtime with the lights outside. Olivia and Josh braved the cold like the fabulous models they are! ;D

But eventually, we all give into the pull of that popcorn smell. We finished up inside the theater, their hands buttery and my memory cards full. What a blast!
